1 + 1 still equals 1
Not two, one undivided without a second. Not separate.
This is how Ricky Lee sees the world- nondualism- and is wondering when the rest of the world is going to catch up.
To help move us along Ricky paints murals to connect with people and place. Mind blowing large scale murals down the side of buildings that seamlessly merge the force of nature with human kind and its' constructs.
Inscribed within each of those pieces is usually a poem (and if not a message) for the people of the community.
'Throw a drop of water
into the sea to prevent
it from drying up'
'The sun will fall to the sea. The moon and tides will rise. These kings and their castles will wash away.'
In reference to his mural in Berlin, it's a reminder that the human 'pursuit of progress' and our destructive nature will have more than human effects, which in turn will be to our detriment as nature comes back to bite us hard. Nature is king and we are all connected to the one and only planet we call home.
Ricky acknowledges people are starting to wake up but equally just as many are feeling confused and overwhelmed with information overload.
'EVERY RIVER FLOWS TO THE SEA AND THE WAVES OF THE SEA WILL SOFTEN THE STONE'
When strength and beauty meets symbolism like this the impact is powerful and mediative at the same time.
I don't think he could paint it anymore eloquently but his message is one of hope and unity. Nature knows the score but what will we decide. Is the answer 1 or 2!?
